With performances in more than 15 cities, at 10 stations and on trains, the festival celebrates the value, importance and enjoyment of the music of composers active in the Netherlands. The fifth edition of the festival will take place on Saturday 20 June 2026, with an impressive final concert featuring composer Joey Roukens' award-winning violin concerto on Sunday 21 June in TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht). From 11 June, there are already performances and activities in various cities as a prelude.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The City Composers 2026 are:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Setareh Nafisi - City composer Groningen\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Setareh Nafisi is a composer, performer and artistic researcher born in Tehran. Her work focuses on psychological and social patterns. Through interdisciplinary music and performance, she creates narrative and ritual-like works that explore shared humanity. Setareh likes to connect sound, body and perception. From chamber music or opera, to immersive performances; it's all about space, participation and physicality. For the Day of the Composer, she creates a performance at Groningen's brand-new railway station where the hall and the moving choir together become parts of a living score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aart Strootman - City composer Rotterdam\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aart Strootman is a composer, guitarist and instrument builder known for his innovative approach to sound and instrumentation. For Rotterdam, he is writing a new city song for mixed choir and self-built electric guitars, made from Rotterdam city wood. The work is a setting of a quote by the recently deceased Rotterdam great Louis Lemaire, founder of the Hofplein Youth Theatre. Strootman won the Gaudeamus Award (2017) and the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize (2019) for his groundbreaking oeuvre.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stephanie Pan - City composer The Hague\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephanie Pan is a composer, voice artist, interdisciplinary maker and performer. Her work is characterised by direct contact with the audience, beyond social expectations and language barriers, creating intense, physical and boundary-pushing expression. Influences from performance, experimental music, improvisation and pop come together in the process. For the Day of the Composer, Pan composes a new performance with unusual vocal techniques with which she playfully takes the singers out of their comfort zone. She also explores The Hague's experimental, multifaceted and sometimes contradictory character. Pan has previously performed at renowned festivals such as CTM Berlin, Sziget and Rewire, and regularly collaborates with ensembles such as Ensemble Klang and Rosa Ensemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Huba de Graaff - Amsterdam city composer\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Huba de Graaff is a composer and music theatre maker and has occupied a unique place in Dutch new music for decades, thanks to her radical imagination and humour. During the Day of the Composer in Amsterdam, she will present the new city song QAQNAS, sung by Naaz together with the VU Chamber Choir, at Amstel Station. This work explores the meaning of freedom for women and also plays a key role in her Kurdish opera of the same name, which will premiere during the Holland Festival. De Graaff previously composed typical Amsterdam songs such as \u2018Laag voor Laag\u2019 (to mark the start of the construction of the North-South line) and \u2018Helder Raamwerk van Vizieren\u2019 (for the completion of the first house on IJburg). For the Day of the Composer, these and other songs are bundled in the Amsterdam Songbook, which also includes brand new arrangements for a cappella (amateur) choirs, which will be performed during the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diederik van der Laag - City composer Utrecht\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Diederik van der Laag is a composer, pianist and guitarist. His mission is to innovate vocal music in a way that touches the head as well as the heart. As City Composer of Utrecht, appointed in cooperation with Gaudeamus, he will compose a grand new vocal work to be performed on the Day of the Composer by as many Utrecht singers and choirs as possible. In this way, Van der Laag wants to connect musicians and put Utrecht on the map as a choral city. The music consists of layers with different entry levels: from simple sing-along material to polyphonic, refined passages for experienced singers. His work is characterised by simplicity and playfulness.  The performance will take place on the steps of the Jaarbeursplein near Utrecht CS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kris Oelbrandt - City composer Zwolle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kris Oelbrandt is a composer and former Trappist monk, known for his idiosyncratic spiritual music. For Zwolle, he composed a new city song for the Overijssels Kamerkoor: \u2018My home, make me soft\u2019. In his compositions, he strives for stillness, introspection and expression of themes such as vulnerability and reconciliation. Oelbrandt studied at the Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth and has built up an extensive oeuvre as a monk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andries van Rossem - City composer Arnhem\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Andries van Rossem is a composer with a wealth of experience in musical theatre and orchestral works. For Arnhem, he is developing a new city song as a collective composition, working as a curator with colleagues, students and musicians. Besides collaborating with De Ereprijs, Focus Filmtheater, Artez students of Composition and Music Theatre and alumni, there are contributions from the Association for House Music, the improvisation group One Room, Fetishism in Sound, city carillonneur Bob van der Linden and a group of some 20 horn players presenting a work by Eva Beunk. His work will be featured<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nicoline Soeter - City composer Tilburg\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicoline Soeter is a composer who stands out for her work with vocal music and unusual sound textures. For Tilburg, she is creating a new work that highlights her signature inventive sound world and focus on the human voice. As artistic director of Ensemble VONK, she works directly with musicians and other creators. Her music is regularly performed at leading festivals such as November Music and Grachtenfestival, and in concert halls such as Muziekgebouw and TivoliVredenburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hans Leenders - City composer Maastricht<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hans Leenders is a composer, organist and choral conductor, with a particular focus on vocal music. As artistic director of Studium Chorale and Kamerkoor Maastricht, he composed a new work for Maastricht that reflects his skills as an organist and choral conductor. Leenders is also titular organist of the Basilica of Our Lady and principal study teacher in organ and choral conducting at the Maastricht Academy of Music. His work is published by Ascolta Music Publishing and performed regularly at home and abroad. On composer's day this year, Hans Leenders will pay attention to the so-called \u201cMaastricht Year 2026\u201d. This means that in addition to his own work, he will pay particular attention to composers affiliated with the city, such as Jean Lambrechts, Rick de Bie and Gerard Franck. The performance will take place in the concert hall of the Maastricht Academy of Music together with the Maastricht Chamber Choir.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Day of the Composer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Day of the Composer is a national festival organised by New Music NOW that celebrates and highlights the music of composers active in the Netherlands. This is done with concerts, workshops, presentations and surprising performances. The strength of the festival lies in the direct visibility of composers as creators in the public space. New work can be heard not only in concert halls and theatres, but also at stations, on trains, from bell towers and in unexpected places in the city. Bringing music to unexpected places, outside the traditional concert hall, creates a fresh, accessible listening experience that brings composers and audiences closer together.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A special composer team, including Composer of the Netherlands&nbsp;<strong>Camiel Jansen<\/strong>, travels the country to report live from different cities and collaborate with local creators. The full programme of Composer's Day 2026 will be announced on 6 May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Practical information and ticket sales<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>fifth edition<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<strong>Day of the Composer<\/strong>\u00a0will take place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June 2026 with several concerts in prelude to the day starting 11 June. The\u00a0<strong>closing concert<\/strong>, including\u00a0<strong>Joey Roukens\u2019 award-winning violin concerto\u00a0<em>Out of the Deep<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>premieres by Kate Moore and Maxim Shalygin<\/strong>, is on Sunday night 21 June at TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht). Together, they join forces within the national New Music NOW Network to present concerts of music by more than a hundred composers, performed by more than five hundred musicians, in more than fifteen cities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Composer's Day is an initiative of New Music NOW.
