Did we report here earlier how the patriotic booksellers are doing their best to bring you to haunt the gates of hell if you 'purchase' an ebook, the reading itself also turns out to be a minefield. One of our followers recently purchased an ebook from the largest online bookseller in the Netherlands (at least until That club from America entered). Her brand new Kobo reader however, proved to be no match for this book. Whereas with all other digital books the device effortlessly refreshed the epaper, turning a page in the book took ''Forgive us' by A.M. Homes well over half an hour, and that was a bit too much slow reading for this lady.
After twice resetting her Kobo reader to factory settings, which did not help, and after discovering that all her other electronic books did work just fine in her device, she decided to take the book itself under the run. And yep: the epub validator gave a dyke of an error message. So she emailed that message, with a clear description of the error message, to her bookshop. And they first reported that there was no warranty on software, and that ebooks are therefore software, and that they are not responsible for errors in that software. When she persisted anyway, she got an email from the technical department, which apparently hadn't read her message saying there was an error in the epub:
You have indicated that you cannot read the e-book 'Forgive Us' from order XXXXXXX on your e-reader. We understand that this is very annoying for you.
To serve you, we would like to ask you to answer the questions below:
Which e-reader is it about?
Are you receiving an error message?
Which operating system do you use (Windows, Linux, Apple)?
Which browser are you using on your PC (IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera)?
Is Adobe Digital Editions on your PC authorised with an Adobe ID?
Is Sony Reader for PC on your PC authorised with an Adobe ID?
Is your e-reader authorised with an Adobe ID?
Was Adobe Digital Editions or Sony Reader for PC authorised before you downloaded the book?
Have you created more than one Adobe ID?
How do you put the books on the e-reader?
- The e-reader is connected as a 'new disk'. You cut/paste/drag the file directly into the new disk/e-reader
- The e-reader is connected to the PC and visible in the software. Drag and drop the files into the software
What steps may you have already taken to solve the problem?
Once we receive your responses, we will provide you with feedback as soon as possible.
We hope this has given you sufficient information.
Sincerely,

The customer in question then gave up and forwarded the email to us. From now on, she will only use her kobo reader for books she did not purchase from this shop. Even better: she informed us that she had gained more understanding for an acquaintance, who had downloaded a file containing 20,000 ebooks via one of the now countless the Pirate Bay spinoffs. All technically excellent and readable on any reader.
She is happy to pay for books, but it is starting to gnaw at her, she informed us.
