Twenty innovative initiatives will receive a contribution from the incentive scheme Culture for Gen Z from Fund 21, investing a total of €460,000 in projects that approach young people not just as an audience, but actively involve them in their content, organisation and execution.
With the scheme, Fund 21 challenges cultural institutions to let young people think and decide from the start. Interest was high: Fund 21 received 162 applications from all over the country. The selected projects are diverse in form and discipline, ranging from night culture to libraries and from visual arts to performing arts.
"We find that many institutions are willing to give young people a real voice, but sometimes lack the space or resources to experiment with it. With this scheme, we encourage a movement in which young people participate fully, and that takes courage. We like to reward that courage." - Henk Christophersen, director-director of Fund 21.
Room for innovation and ownership
Fund 21's most important target group is young people aged between 12 and 30. At this stage of life, themes such as identity, direction and connection are important. Art and culture can play a role in this.
With this scheme, Fund 21 wants to start a movement in which young people naturally play a role in arts and culture. Not as a capstone, but from the beginning. Their involvement in content, organisation and decision-making should not be an exception, but part of standard practice. By making room for experimentation and new ways of working, Fund 21 stimulates institutions to really give young people a voice and thus contribute to a future-proof sector.
Two examples from the selection:
Litter (The Hague) develops a multi-day programme with young people at the intersection of art, music and night culture, in collaboration with young, local makers.
Bijlmer Park Theatre (Amsterdam Zuidoost) strengthens the cultural diversity and topicality of its programming with a youth panel (15-25 years old). Young people actively contribute through media and content choices to an innovative theatre offer.

About Fund 21
Fund 21 is a private fund that supports projects of significance to today's society. We do so in the fields of Arts & Culture, Arts & Education and Youth & Society. We support professional, high-quality projects with a focus on initiatives aimed at young people (12-30 years old). Every year, we invest over 11 million euros in initiatives that contribute in a positive way to the challenges of our time. In doing so, we see ourselves not only as a financier, but also as a committed partner that identifies and lists opportunities.
@culturepress Browsing through the new allocations in framework gen Z by Fonds21, one notices that it is for subsidising participation, less focused on content. But I haven't delved very deeply into it yet either.
