All happy families look alike... But the family we get to know in 'Dutch Comedy' is anything but happy.

On Thursday 1 April at 20:30, the show "Dutch Comedy" (try-out) by De Gemeenschap at Concordia can be seen via a live stream. The try-out is an upbeat piece that deals with intense topics. An emotional group portrait of people who have difficulty dealing with emotions. With text by Rob de Graaf and direction by Roy Peters, born in Twente.

For decades, two parents (Debbie Korper and Dic van Duin) have maintained a mistake they call 'a good marriage'. Their grown-up daughter (Yara Alink) moves through the world effortlessly. Her boyfriend (Milan Boele van Hensbroek) also knows what comfortable and middle-of-the-road living is. But then there is the son (Sander Plukaard): a hyper-sensitive maternal child, prone to passivity and contemplation and, at twenty-six, still living in the parental home. Everything changes when this sensitive young man comes home one Saturday night with a lover (Gerardjan Rijnders) he appears to have had for some time: a much older man with a razor-sharp gaze and ditto tongue. Under the influence of this new source of power, the family house of cards takes a battering.

With an exquisite ensemble of actors, The Community brings to life a world that could be described as a twenty-first-century version of what was once 'All in the family'. As in that legendary sitcom, family harmony is under constant pressure - from outside and within. The lyrics are harsh and current social contradictions collide in abundance. 'The personal is political': what moves and divides us society-wide partly determines the relationships in the microcosm that is the family. But however high the tensions run: liberating laughter and compassion are never far away.
