Joint committee considers plans national museum of slavery history

A joint committee of the Amsterdam Arts Council and the Council for Culture will examine plans for a national museum of slavery history in Amsterdam in the coming months. Amsterdam's Municipal Executive and outgoing minister Van Engelshoven (OCW) have asked the advisory councils for a joint opinion. The advice, expected this autumn, will address, among other things, the content and national character of the museum. Chairman of the committee is mayor Franc Weerwind of Almere.

Last May, the Regiegroep Nationaal Trans-Atlantisch Slavernijmuseum (NTASM) presented the exploration 'With the power of ancestors' commissioned by the municipality of Amsterdam. This outlines what the museum facility should meet. The joint committee has been asked to advise on this exploration based on expertise and knowledge from the museum and cultural field.

In addition to Franc Weerwind, Marieke van Bommel, Nancy Jouwe, Imara Limon, Leroy Niemel, John Olivieira (also a member of the Council for Culture), Matthias van Rossum and Katja Weitering (also a board member of the Amsterdam Arts Council) sit on the committee.
