On Thursday 7 April 2022, family show I'm not here for a while (8-108) premiered at the Maaspodium, Rotterdam. The show turned out to be aptly titled, as Ik ben er even niet was actually supposed to premiere in December 2021. But due to corona lockdown, both the premiere and the rest of the tour could not go ahead. Now this colourful mix of physical theatre, dance and music will premiere and tour after all. In I am not here for a while director Moniek Merkx brings an ode to dreamers and outsiders. After a series of six performances in Rotterdam, the show will tour throughout the Netherlands until June 2022.
IN THE WAITING ROOM OF REAL LIFE
Sometimes I just don't want to be there for a while. Then I need a camouflage suit, an invisibility cloak or a hole in the ground I can sink through. I don't want to be a shining profile or part of a complex social network. I just want to play in a world of secrets.
I am not here for a while is about the pressure young people can feel to have to conform, to always be prettier, stronger and better than they feel. The show is set in the waiting room of real life, the only place where you just understand the rules of the game.
MONIEK MERKX ON I'M NOT HERE AT THE MOMENT
"I'm Not Here For A While" is for me about the inner world of shy backsliders, dreamy outsiders and ferocious clingers. In their heads, they are dragon slayers from their frozen fortress. In real life, they dare nothing. And somewhere along the way, of course, something happens: a ray of sunshine, a helpless hop, a stroke on their heads. Clumsily, they open the door ajar, spread their wings and let themselves be lifted by each other and their boundless dreams. The performance is a time travel past loving and confusing memories. Melancholy and adventure alternate. In my opinion, no one goes through life untouched, but comfort and beauty is everywhere and for everyone. If only you look."
