cut-ups & fuck-ups, Berio & Burroughs
Saturday, September 3
Asko|Schönberg serves you up with Words & Music an afternoon and evening full of cut-ups & fuck-ups. A rush of sensations; fantastic, stark, absurd, disruptive and with humour. A festival full of cut-up, sliced-up and brand-new performances, installations, film and more, inspired by the cut-up techniques of composer Berio and writer Burroughs.
After the successful first edition in 2020, Asko|Schönberg once again brings together makers and performers from different disciplines in unexpected ways. Words & Music is this time inspired by composer Luciano Berio (1926-2003) and literary enfant terrible of the sixties William S. Burroughs (1914-1997). Both applied the cut-up technique in their own unique way: they used fragments of existing and new material to create new work.
Festival
Words & Music presents musical theatre, do-it-yourself cut-ups, brand new music, installations, film and more.
The festival route runs through various areas of the Muziekgebouw. On show will include the performance Lunch Music, inspired by the book Naked Lunch by Burroughs. Composer Yannis Kyriakides creates a hallucinatory result with fragments from the book, live electronics, the virtuosity of Slagwerk Den Haag and the singers of Silbersee. In Berio's Recital I (for Cathy) A singer is slowly going insane and Genevieve Murphy presents her show I Don't Want To Be An Individual All On My Own; a sonic tale of pop, spoken word and sound sculptures about the search for real connection in an individualised world. Performer Akim Moiseenkov pops up between different parts of the programme.
Expect during Words & Music experimentation, (un)sense and sheer beauty.
