The Official Jury Selection 2022 in alphabetical order:

BAAAAAA

Circus Treurdier
Thu 08 & Fri 09 Sep | The Little Comedy

From the jury report:
'An intelligent and hilarious portrait of intractable group dynamics. With unctuous, brazen acting, the five-member cast reveals the most disgusting manifestation of human beings. The actors also tap into a vast musical spectrum.'

THE DOKTER

ITA Ensemble / Robert Icke
Tue 06 to Fri 09 Sep | ITA

From the jury report:
'Highly ambitious idea piece in which a blistering whirlwind of current pain points and complex themes pass before you. It is a haunting and moving piece that makes you reflect on your own inevitably subjective perspective.'

Photo: Dim Balsam

GIRLS & BOYS

Toneelgroep Oostpool / Daria Bukvić
Wed 7 & Thu 8 Sep | ITA

From the jury report:
'Hadewych Minis takes the viewer into a story that begins as a light-hearted boy meets girl-story, but ends up as jet black drama. With her open play, Minis shows how a character has to deal with the utmost pain. The performance leaves you gasping for breath.'

LA CODISTA

Acting group Wunderbaum / Marleen Scholten / Associazione TRAK / Theater Rotterdam
Fri 09 Sept | ITA

From the jury report:
'A beautiful philosophical gem about our view of time. The performance is poignant, liberating. La Codista shows that superfluous time is superfluous and thus offers important reflections on the present time.'

LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER

toneelgroep Amsterdam (vh de warme winkel) / Frascati Productions
Fri 09 & Sat 10 Sep | N.n.a.

From the jury report:
'Florian Myjer and Lisa Verbelen explore how entrenched gender roles still grip contemporary sexuality. Confrontational at times, but ultimately especially moving in how the performers find liberation in their own marginality.'

LOWER THAN ME

Korthals Stuurman Theatre Productions / Olivier Diepenhorst
Mon 05 & Tue 06 Sep | ITA

From the jury report:
'Beautifully, the makers show how women endured in a system of oppression in the Dutch East Indies. Lighter than I gives space to women's perspective, which was missing for too long in our colonial past.'

THE MASTER AND MARGARITA

Orkater / The Newcomers Convoy
Mon 29 to Wed 31 Aug  | ITA

From the jury report:
'In an associative bad trip, the viewer is playfully confronted with fascinating philosophical thinking about truth and reality. A delightful nightmare you don't want to wake up from.'

SALOMON

TG ILAY / Het Zuidelijk Toneel
Fri 02 to Tue 06 Sep |  on-site

From the jury report:
'Ilay den Boer challenges his audience in an open, intimate setting to (dare to) examine their own moral positions. Solomon's judgment is an important ethical thinking exercise that actively challenges you to move beyond reflexes of easy answers and quick judgements.'

SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE

Theatre Rotterdam / Erik Whien
Sat 03 & Sun 04 Sep | ITA

From the jury report:
'A crushing war story. With his clear directorial choices and perfectly dosed actor direction, Whien proves once again to be one of today's greatest directors. Through the lived-in acting, the characters mercilessly claw their way into you.'

TROJAN WARS

HNTJong / The National Theatre / Noël Fischer not to be seen during NTF 2022

From the jury report:
'Trojan Wars is a great theatrical feast that mercilessly gets under your skin. At the same time, the makers show how political intrigue and power games can unleash wars. This makes Trojan Wars timeless and extremely topical.'photo: Bowie Verschuuren

WINTER/21/y.

Ryan Djojokarso / LIBI
Fri 02 & Sat 03 Sep | Frascati Theatre

From the jury report:
'Ryan Djojokarso seeks confusion, dares to irritate and then manages to touch in a beautiful way too. A wonderfully raw experience that creates space for confrontation and discomfort: an artistically powerful and socially very urgent theatrical document.'

THE MIRACULOUS INCIDENT WITH THE DOG IN THE NIGHT

Theatre alliance / Pieter Kramer
Thu Sep 01 | Delamar Theatre

From the jury report:
'The miraculous incident ... unpacks in exuberant group choreographies, but also explicitly seeks stillness. It remains vintage-Pieter Kramer: an exorbitant actor's party to lick your fingers at.'

The Dutch Drama Jury on its 2021-2022 season selection:
A wealth of offerings

In the midst of the coronal lockdown, 425 companies, makers, theatres and advocacy groups promised in unison that they would be there when the venues were allowed to reopen. They made the promise that because of the lockdown, the value of the arts would not be lost. The promise that later, when the theatres would reopen, everyone would be there again. That people would have to hang on for a while, but that soon there would be lots of beautiful, moving and interesting things to see again. It was a promise born out of a genuine need and the need to stay connected to the public.

This season shows that the makers have more than kept that promise. Audiences were presented with a flowery palette of delayed performances and premieres. The Nederlandse Toneeljury had to pull out all the stops to see the amount of new productions, many with limited run times. It was a wealth to be able to choose from a wide range again.

The jury is tasked with selecting the best performances of the past season. We see the best as inspiring performances that arise in the mutually reinforcing interaction of content, form and performance quality. With this selection, the Nederlandse Toneeljury presents an anthology of the beauty that Dutch theatre has to offer. A beauty that does not complacently dazzle or conceal, but one that stimulates, disrupts and immerses the audience in wonder. A beauty that touches you.

The selection is an ode to the creators and audiences who make theatre together. Let the content and the theatrical richness of this selection entice audiences to immerse themselves in an evening of theatre full of beauty, comfort, disruption, amusement and wonder. This selection by the jury is both a look back at the promise that was fulfilled and a spur for the season to come.
