When composer/guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen heard South African poet Antjie Krog recite her own poem a few years ago, she was floored. She was overwhelmed by the sound, that diction, that timbre of South African.
Van Binsbergen has been working with writers and poets since 2003. Literature and poetry are a great source of inspiration for her.
In Van Binsbergen's latest composition A Skin of Sound sound of language are the starting point. She uses audio recordings in which Antjie Krog recites her work. Her powerful diction and the specificity of South African become part of the music.
A hybrid ensemble consisting of Asko|Schönberg, an improvising pop singer and a South African Jazz trio together explore all corners of sound, language and music. A colourful project in which the richness of many worlds inspires each other.
A Skin of Sound was commissioned by Asko|Schönberg and November Music and created with support from Fonds Podiumkunsten.
