On Thursday 29 June, a Tryater delegation will travel from Leeuwarden to Bautzen, Germany, where, as part of the European minority languages phōnē a robust three-day conference between international theatre companies.

During the three-day event, politicians, linguists, minority language experts and theatre makers talk to each other about the language situation, goals and challenges in diverse minority language areas. These days, companies from all over the world meet in the German state of Saxony: in addition to European theatre groups from Fryslân, Italy, Spain, Ireland, France, Norway and Romania, delegates from Canada, Australia and Hawaii, among others, come to the town of Bautzen, where Sorbian is spoken.

The eight to phōnē participating theatre companies from Europe meet annually. Last year, the group was in Leeuwarden, where Tryater immersed its international colleagues in the world of Frisian. Within phōnē (Greek for voice/speech), supported by the European Union and with Tryater as the lead agency, companies collaborate in a variety of fields, with language as the common denominator.

Mienskiplikens

Business director Valentijn Fit of Tryater'This ynternasjonale gearwurkingsferbân, net om 'e noucht finansjeel stipe troch de Europeeske Uny, smyt in soad op foar alle partijen. We stimulate inoarje inoar to continue and make beautiful things May the own lyric language, even if there is pressure from the Hearskjende language.

In 2024, Tryater will perform as part of phōnē a production about (the diversity of) Frisian on the provincial stage, as the other parties then also develop performances in the language area. At the next European meeting, next year, national productions will meet internationally and cross-pollinations will take place through, for instance, translations. Also, Fanfare, the big final performance of Tryater's triptych about Frisian brass band culture in the upcoming theatre season, affiliated with phōnē. During the season, more will be known about developments within the European project.
