The NUT (Nieuw Utrechts Toneel) presents in collaboration with illustrator Mart Veldhuis Other people's fault: a social project at the intersection of visual arts, podcast & language with the aim of making the world of debt visible. From autumn 2023, various artists will engage with people with debt, a debt story or people working in the world of debt. The stories will be captured in artworks. The project will run until 2025 and will have various forms and moments of presentation.
World Poverty Day
On 17 October, a City Dinner was held on the Berlinplein in Utrecht Leidsche Rijn as part of World Poverty Day. On behalf of NUT, artists joined Buurtkamer Hart voor Leidsche Rijn to kick off the project Other people's Guilt.
Debts in the Netherlands
One in five households in the Netherlands faces money problems. Unfortunately, help often only comes when debts are already sky-high. Despite the large number of Dutch people for whom debts are the order of the day, it is difficult to make the problems palpable to those who do not have to deal with them.
Money & art
The NUT is creating theatre on the theme 'the future of money' in 2023. In summer 2023, the performance was Good gold money show, in which surplus capital was tracked and collected. The show raised over a tonne of surplus capital in less than three months. Other people's fault is a mirror project of Good gold money: it puts the opposite of excess capital at the centre.
For illustrator Mart Veldhuis, the project is also a logical step in his oeuvre. The artist graduated from HKU with his project Own fault. In it, Mart depicted his struggle with his student debt in a huge tapestry and sold the artwork for exactly the amount of his debt. The sale of the work made him debt-free.
