Theatre Group Alum will tour from 4 December 2024 with the famous tragedy of Sophocles. In a world where power, principles and justice collide daily, it posits Antigone us to questions that are more urgent today than ever. The performance, directed by Erik Snel exposes the eternal struggle between laws and moral obligations, and touches on themes that directly address contemporary social issues, such as civil disobedience, personal responsibility and the power of the individual in the face of authority.

The show

In this tragedy of resistance, Antigone battles her uncle, King Kreon. The war in Thebes has just ended, with Antigone's brother, Polyneikes, captain of the enemy, killed. Kreon forbids his burial and Antigone finds herself diametrically opposed to him if she wants to give her brother a dignified farewell.

She ignores the ban and is captured. And so begins a battle between two stubborn people; Kreon wants to set an example, Antigone screws into her rightness. The battle between law and conscience leaves a trail of destruction in its wake.

Unplugged

Theatre group Alum believes in the power of imagination. They have chosen to perform this classic tragedy in a contemporary, minimalist way, with strong acting and stripped-down design that highlight the raw emotion and underlying themes of the play. Alum has already released several shows in this unplugged version, with the actors able to play this play from classrooms to theatres.

Theatre group Alum

Theatre group Alum has been making clear and concrete theatre for 33 years. Text theatre with plenty of humour and dynamism for a wide audience. The primal stories they perform come from the classical repertoire from the ancient Greeks to Shakespeare. New repertoire is created regularly, but always based on the beautiful showcase of great stories about human inadequacy. Theatre group Alum, famously performs Antigone again. In Gerard Koolschijn's translation, Erik Snel has once again made an adaptation that ties in with the final Greek exam. In addition to going on tour, the show will play mainly for gymnasts throughout the Netherlands.
