According to NRC Handelsblad Culture cuts became fatal for 'only' 11 theatre institutions. In doing so, they assume groups that actually dissolved themselves. In their overview, however, they overlook the companies that voluntarily dissolved themselves by merging with another company. In addition, there are a number of institutions that disbanded before the new round because it was already clear that they would not receive any money. If we do count those, we come to at least 34 companies. That is already 25% of what was on offer before the cuts.
Apart from Carver, Keesen&Co (wrongly counted among the stoppers by NRC, by the way), Dansgroep Amsterdam, Onafhankelijk Toneel, Productiehuis Brabant, The Lunatics, De Voortzetting, DanceWorks Rotterdam, RBO Sinfonia, De Citadel and Danshuis Station Zuid, the following nine companies have also ceased to exist: Siberia, De Meekers and Max from Rotterdam, Huis a/d Werf, Festival a/d Werf and Springdance in Utrecht, Stella The Hague and Huis a/d Amstel and Wederzijds in Amsterdam. They are merged, sometimes taking part of their budget, more often with only a very slimmed-down budget, and often after laying off almost all the old staff, as Springdance and Festival a/d Werf did. On the orchestra merger in the East Netherlands we already wrote extensively, and the one in Southern Netherlands has also cost musicians.
In addition, a large number of production houses have already stopped without waiting for the application round because it was already clear that they would not receive any money: production houses such as Huis van Bourgondië in Limburg and Grand Theatre in Groningen, De Noord Nederlandse Dans and, besides Holand Symfonia, of course, the orchestras that fell under the broadcasting system such as the Radio Kamer Filharmonie and the Metropole, which was sent out into the wide world with a barely adequate backpack of money.
And what about the sector institutes and their libraries? So come at least five more.
That 'only' 11 companies have therefore dropped out of the system, we must judge here as 'untrue'. There are at least 34. That a few new companies have been added in their place does not change that. Toneelgroep Maas, NT Jong, De ToneelMakerij and Springfestival Utrecht make up for the loss somewhat, but do so with less than the constituent parts had available.
