Barely recovered from the shock following the death of Robin Williams, there is the news that Lauren Bacall (89) has also left us. Icon of film noir, that dark and influential genre of Hollywood's heyday. Her first films, in which she strongly antagonised Humphrey Bogart (she married him in 1945) with her unmistakable presence, deep voice and sense of sarcasm, instantly made her a living legend. We are talking about To Have and Have Not (1944) and The Big Sleep (1946), among others.
All that was a long time ago, but even after that great fireworks, Bacall has always remained active in film (and on Broadway). Who claimed there is no more work for older actresses? She was even still on the roll for the yet-to-be-filmed thriller Trouble is My Business.
Now when was the last time I saw her? Her most recent work (The Forger, 2012, and Wide Blue Yonder, 2010) has never been released in our country. But that she also put her talent at the service of enfant terrible Lars von Trier in Dogville (2003) and Manderlay (2005) gives me great pleasure. Her voice could be heard in several animated films. No, not big Disney blockbusters, but, for instance, the English-language version of the playful and charming Ernest et Célestine. That too is nice to see, or rather, hear. Watch the trailer and listen to that unforgettable voice one more time.
