Does the International Film Festival Rotterdam finally dare to choose? During the film festival in Toronto, new IFFR director Bero Beyer announced the first plans for the 2016 edition. The most striking piece of news is that the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition will now have just one winner, instead of three equal awardees as until now.
The cash sum associated with this Hivos Tiger Award has thus increased to EUR 40,000. In addition, there will be a special jury prize for an extraordinary artistic achievement. Furthermore, the Tiger competition will be downsized from 15 to 8 titles, indicating a sharper selection.
Each day during the festival, one of the Tiger candidates will receive extra attention. "We want to put the best, most innovative, original and challenging works by filmmakers in the biggest and best light possible," said Bero Beyer.
The programme will be divided into four sections, which at first glance may improve clarity.
First, new talent with innovative films. Then inspiring work by established makers, a third section with masterclasses and retrospectives and a fourth section in which filmmakers and critics explore the film landscape and the overlap with other media.
The first title selected for the Tiger competition is History's Future by documentary filmmaker and visual artist Fiona Tan. A film essay in a hybrid of docu and fiction, about one man's odyssey through turbulent Europe and his own mind. With actors like Johanna ter Steege (Tirza) and Denis Lavant (Holy Motors), it looks promising.
