What happens when original and exciting makers and thinkers shape the SPOT-LIVE programme? If a leading philosopher, theatre-maker or musician is allowed to fill the stage with debate, what would it be about? If they were allowed to inspire you with work that touches them, what would they showcase? Be inspired by three curators who will share with you their vision of what matters now. Take this inspiration into your work and life.
SPOT-LIVE is a new annual event, succeeding the Congress of Performing Arts. Spot-Live is organised in cooperation with VSCD and NAPK.
The trustees
We proudly present to you our three curators: Daria Bukvić (theatre maker), René ten Bos (Denker des Vaderlands) and Merlijn Twaalfhoven (composer). These three disruptive thinkers and makers will each shape their own programme.
They bring their thinking closer through in-depth interviews, showcase their favourite works of art and invite other thinkers and opinion-makers to engage with each other on issues that matter.
Daria Bukvić
'I strongly believe in the critical, connecting and emancipating power of theatre.'
Daria Bukvić is a rising star in the theatre world. Her work is characterised by the playful and unconventional way she tackles loaded social issues. Her performances often reach young and diverse audiences who rarely go to the theatre. In Nobody Home (2014), she created a personal portrait of refugee issues with three actors. In her version of Othello (2018) for Het Nationale Theater, she explores racism and white privilege in Shakespeare's classic. Milk & Dates (2018) gives an unseen insight into the lives of second-generation Moroccan-Dutch women.
René ten Bos
'You should also always read your enemy, because they will show you where your own thinking is weak or can be criticised'.
However gleeful, Ten Bos will never shy away from complexity. That is why he dislikes moralists, popularizers and other people who think they have a quick fix for everything. This is not to say that he is against solutions, quite the contrary, but that he doubts solutions that are not solutions. He also doubts slippery opinions. Hence, his thinking often takes shape via twists, turns, side paths and escape routes. Call it fine-tuned orientation in an absurd world. Call it wandering. Call it meandering. Call it demure.'
Merlin Twaalfhoven
I see how the world yearns for more vision and creativity on the big issues at hand'.
Merlijn Twaalfhoven is a composer and designer of music projects in unusual locations. He has worked in nature reserves, refugee camps, a gypsy ghetto, the favela of Rio de Janeiro and in living rooms in East Jerusalem. Always breaking existing boundaries between genres and styles, he chooses current events as subjects. Merlin is one of the forerunners of a movement within the art world that argues that art does not only belong in concert halls and museums, but should take its place in society. In his book "Art in the World", he argues for a direct connection between art and society.
