80 million it should cost, and it should hold a lot of people, with three theatres, and it should all happen on the lot now occupied by the Theater aan de Parade in Den Bosch. That has proved so difficult that there has been fuss about it since 2006. Now there is a design, approved and all, from a couple of years ago. That must now be implemented, regardless of all the protests that the building is too big, too ambitious, unfeasible and never exploitable. At least, that's what Wim Claessen (former director of Theatre Festival Boulevard) and Cor Passchier (architect and researcher) think. They sent letters around, wrote articles and these also reached Culture Press.
Reason enough to have a talk, because it is very strange to implement a building plan now for a theatre you don't even know if it will ever be profitable in the one-and-a-half-meter society. Wouldn't it be more convenient to seize your chance now to come up with something completely new that will serve the one-and-a-half-meter society?
Indeed, for the time being, shouldn't the Bossche city council think about the city's makers first, and how they are going to survive the corona crisis?
So we talk about ambitious city councils, impossible building plans, corona, empty theatres in 'the province' and the absurdity of local culture and most importantly, the building industry. Delightful conversation turned out.
