Under the banner 'Sender Boulevard', 25 performances, performances and installations are popping up in 's-Hertogenbosch this summer, especially in the second week of August. Their shared motto is 'Approach the other'. Because after months of isolation, appropriate distance and avoidance, the desire to get [a little] closer glows.
Boulevard celebrates the resilience of creators and audiences in 2020 with a programme full of live encounters. In this strange in-between year, we practice the forgotten art of proximity. Curious about each other, curious about the unknown. Of course, we do so while respecting the RIVM guidelines; therefore, no full halls and squares, but intimate projects spread over time.
"This spring, we suddenly had to distance ourselves from ordinary life and other people. The theme 'Approach the other' calls for us to come together again. Not at a festival unfortunately, but we are incredibly happy that with the support of many partners we can still realise a wonderful live theatre programme. Our makers invite a search for closeness and the sharing of stories," said Viktorien van Hulst, director.
The 2020 programme features work by: Alexandra Broeder, Bart van den Woesteijne, Benjamin Verdonck, Boukje Schweigman, Dries Verhoeven, Francesca Lazzeri, Guilherme Miotto, Minou Bosua, Strijbos&VanRijswijk, Sven Ratzke, The100Hands, Willemijn Zevenhuijzen/Theatre Artemis.
Live programme
Under the name 'Sender Boulevard', performances will be shown at various locations and new theatre projects with groups from the city will be developed. Theatre maker Benjamin Verdonck cycles through the city and presents miniature theatre, the makers of Building Conversation speak in to Care as Caress about the dilemmas of caring and caring, and composers Strijbos&VanRijswijk draw a sound walk. Dries Verhoeven brings the reprise of U bevindt zich hier, Boukje Schweigman presents a new spatial installation with Spectrum, Theater Artemis premieres Happy Clappy, a school run by clowns, while Francesca Lazzeri explores the social and emotional consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in her installation my shadow used to have a density. And a private open-air theatre will present musical theatre, concerts and family performances this Bossche Zomer.
Tickets are on sale for several titles, while other projects are made with and for specific groups of city residents and can be followed online via word and image reports.
And more
Besides the programme of Dutch and Flemish artists for closer visitors, Boulevard continues its cooperation with several international partners. The main focus this summer is exchange with colleagues and remote artists. The international programme can be followed via the site. The website also provides links to two podcast series developed around stories from the festival.
On Saturday 15 August, Boulevard, in collaboration with HONI and the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch, and with the support of Brabant Remembers, will realise a television broadcast around the 75th anniversary of the Japanese surrender in the former Dutch East Indies. Musicians and actors with Indonesian and Moluccan roots are working on this programme, edited by Vincent Wijlhuizen and Bo Tarenskeen.
