Today we are talking about youth theatre. A genre I myself first encountered in 1994, thanks to 'Mirad, een jongen uit Bosnië' by Ad de Bont, performed by Theatergroep Wederzijds. Marijn Lems got his love for youth theatre from his mother, who, like his father, was a librarian in Tilburg. What we agree on, in this podcast, the third already in a ongoing series, is that youth theatre, and then the kind that brings school performances thanks to government subsidies, often manages to connect with audiences much better than theatre made for adults.
We will find out exactly why, and so we also call colleague Henri Drost, youth theatre specialist since he had children of his own. Now he works for the Council for Culture, and that might just mean good news for theatre made for people of a certain age.
I myself found my love for theatre, after eight years studying Theatre Science, back with youth theatre. All three of us - Marijn and Henri agree - think that more adults should dare to cross the threshold of youth theatre.
Whether creators of adult theatre should perhaps also look at youth theatre more often as something to learn from, we haven't discussed that (yet).
