Theatre Festival Boulevard 's-Hertogenbosch will take place from Thursday 5 to Sunday 22 August 2021. The 37th festival edition features over 120 different performances, concerts, performances and installations in theatres, at unique locations and in the Zuiderpark. We also move into the night with Fomo Fatale, club nights with steaming sounds. The Zuiderpark serves as the new, spacious festival heart, including the well-known Block Boxes, a park stage with daily programme, in-depth talks and many theatre tents. Welcome!
Under the slogan Approaching the Other, the festival offered its audience an exercise in closeness in 2020 - during the alternative corona edition 'Sender Boulevard'. This year, the festival invites to reflect on the future and the shelf life of deeply held beliefs. Can growth still be taken for granted? Can you tax nature and the environment without limits? Festival motto: Hack the horizon. Theatre-makers are indispensable in this. They connect and point to unbeaten paths. They intertwine dream and courage. That's why this year Boulevard invites its audience to learn to relate to themselves anew through the makers. To nature and the climate. To our origins, care and health. To each other. Because a new era cannot start without a new outlook.
Programme
For many creators, the thinking behind Hack the horizon is central this year. Choreographer Joseph Toonga [GB], with Born to Manifest and Born to Protest [two parts of a triptych], sets a world in which caring for each other and mutual support counterbalance a harsh reality affecting the lives of these black British men . In the intimate and topical performance/installation Birds without flight, Francesca Lazzeri [NL] throws up our human relationship with the plant world in a bird's-eye view, hoping to make more room for an alternative balance between different species. Nastaran Razawi Khorasani's [NL] performance Songs for no one offers a portrait of a hidden society, where young people are heard rhythmically and loudly. Italian choreographer Chiara Bersani [IT] performs the solo performance The Whales Song in which the audience evolves into a group and from there evolves into a choir.
And more...
The theatre projects of line73 with which we connected theatre-makers, neighbourhoods in Bossche and residents last year also get a sequel. For instance, theatre maker Alexandra Broeder [NL] returns with The Sheeptown Project, which she created on the basis of the conversations she had last year with mentally vulnerable young people, and Schweigman& [NL], together with a diverse group of Bossche women, takes a close look at the female body in Sensual Summer. This year Boulevard also hosts fellow festivals that unfortunately could not take place last year with programming from November Music, Festival Cement and Bosch Parade and we see the return of a number of audience favourites such as Laika/ Zefiro Torna [BE] with BALSAM, Jan Martens/ GRIP [BE] with Elisabeth gets her way and De Warme Winkel/Florian Myjer [NL] with Lady Chatterley's lover.
