Plein Theatre presents from 13 July to 30 July the extraordinary four-channel video installation Street Vendors: Medellín, Tirana, Johannesburg, Yogyakarta by artist Su Tomesen. The video installation shows the daily life of street vendors on four different continents.

Street Vendors: Medellín, Tirana, Johannesburg, Yogyakarta

Street Vendors: Medellín, Tirana, Johannesburg, Yogyakarta is about how private enterprises occupy urban public space every day and how the small entrepreneurs - sometimes literally - make ends meet to generate an income. The daily, sometimes miraculous activities are shown without dialogue and without text and explanation. Some situations are reminiscent of visual art performances or installations.

The installation is a loop: the four films of 30 minutes each begin and end at roughly the same hour of the morning and are presented in one space. The viewer is taken through four days on different continents strung together by appearances and disappearances of stalls, repairs and inventive solutions to everyday problems. Watching the four films together, one can see the global similarities of the street vendors of the four different continents.

Su Tomesen

Artist Su Tomesen makes videos, photographs, installations and interventions. Her projects and series are characterised by social engagement, an anthropological character and raw energy. The subjects mostly concern the dynamics of the urban fabric and human ingenuity within the wonderful world of micro-economy. Her videos move on the edge of fine art and documentary, as does Street Vendors: Medellín, Tirana, Johannesburg, Yogyakarta, on which she worked for six years.
