In 2014, The Cutting Table published A review of The World Turned Door. What not many people will know is that prior to that moment, there was a weeks-long battle behind the scenes over this publication. De Wereld Draait Door tried with all its might to stop the episode by refusing permission to quote the images. Initially, VPRO also decided to go along with this and asked us to choose another subject. Behind the scenes, Ewout Jansen provided extensive legal advice and assistance, and managed to guide us through this Kafkaesque maze unscathed.
In this episode, we discuss this hair-raising episode in detail. At the same time, we discuss other abuses at the intersection of the judiciary and the cultural sector including John de Mol's new claim bot that uses copyright as an excuse to saddle artists and performers with claims of hundreds of euros for standard stock photos.
