Words & Music: cut-ups & fuck ups, Berio & Burroughs at Asko|Schönberg

THIS IS A PRESS RELEASE

Asko|Schönberg organises for the second time Words & Music, a festival full of cut-ups & fuck ups. A rush of sensations: fantastic, stark, absurd, disruptive and with humour. A day of screwed-up, cut-up and brand-new performances in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ and Tolhuistuin.

After the successful first edition in 2020, Asko|Schönberg is once again bringing together makers from different disciplines in unique ways. Words & Music is this time inspired by composer Luciano Berio (1926-2003) and literary enfant terrible of the sixties William S. Burroughs (1914-1997). Both applied the cut-up technique in their own unique way: they used (fragments of) existing material to create new work, thus rewriting history and simultaneously casting a glance at a possible new future.

Besides Berio & Burroughs, Asko|Schönberg presents transverse and straightforward creators and performers of today in a festival featuring premieres, intimate mini-performances, mystery performances, musical theatre, do-it-yourself-cut-up, installations, film and more.

Expect experimentation, (un)sense and sheer beauty.

The festival takes visitors on a route that leads through performances in different spaces of the Muziekgebouw and Tolhuistuin. Transport between the two venues can be by boat or on your own.

The press on Words & Music edition 2020

The festival Words & Music is for lovers of enigmatic, polyinterpretable art... performed at the highest imaginable level by Asko|Schönberg... (The Parool).
Nice festival, this Words & Music, in which many captivating pieces that are rarely performed sounded, along with some wonderful premieres and with fortunately a very decent turnout. (New Notes).

Words & Music is an interesting, multifaceted expression of the musical possibilities of that inspiration. (Theatre newspaper).
