During the upcoming Makersdag on 7 March in Het Huis Utrecht, the Utrechtse Lichting will present themselves, a group of Utrecht theatre makers who graduated during the pandemic. The circumstances in which these makers had to take their first steps in the field were tough in corona time. HKU Theatre, Theater Kikker and Het Huis Utrecht therefore jointly offer these theatre makers the opportunity to create and present new work on stages in Utrecht.

Passionate creators with diverse stories

"I just really want to make things" is literally in Patsy Kroonenberg's project plan (Acting, year 2020/2021). The urgency for budding creators to stay productive and be visible is great. The 16 selected theatre makers are therefore very happy with this opportunity. They are working on 10 diverse projects. These range from a dark fairy tale about Tata Steel, to a portrait of Amsterdamsestraatweg and an installation, which shows that technology and medicine enable people to be more than the confines of their bodies1.

The selection of the Utrechtichting

Ten projects were selected via an open call among HKU Theatre alumni from the past two years. These young makers have a demonstrable connection to Utrecht, because they live and/or work in Utrecht, or are entering this connection.

The Municipality of Utrecht supports the Utrechtichting

HKU Theatre is implementing the post-corona support package of the Municipality of Utrecht for alumni, graduated in 2019, 2020 and 2021. To spend this, the Utrecht Foundation was developed in cooperation with Het Huis Utrecht and Theater Kikker. "Development (workspace and guidance) and presentation place for talent (a stage) are two important pillars of our joint mission to give young talent more space in the city." - Theatre Kikker & Het Huis Utrecht. With this initiative, the three institutions are giving alumni the chance to build a future in the theatre field in these troubled times.

When to see

The presentations of the Utrecht Lichting can be seen in various forms (from insights into the creative process to premieres of performances): 7 March Het Huis Utrecht, during De Makersdag, 31 March and 1 April at Theatre Kikker.
