In this bleak everyday reality, Theatre Group Alum gives you the opportunity to escape to Ilyria, where audiences will be immersed in a world of romance, music and gender fluidity. From 21 to 30 December, this sneaky queer party takes over Theatre Kikker.

Shakespeare

Twelfth Night was written by William Shakespeare as a sneaky Queer party within the norms of the seventeenth century. At the time, all roles in England were played by men, this gave the love scenes and gender confusion an extra layer in the play.

 About the show

Theatre Group Alum has asked writer Ayden Carlo to adapt Twelfth Night into a gender-fluid comedy of today. As Shakespeare might actually have wanted to write it, but what couldn't be done at the time. In this new version, protagonist Cesario, a trans boy, washes up on Ilyria. There, he soon discovers that this may well be the place where he can truly be himself. This gives him self-confidence, so much self-confidence that it immediately lands him a job with Duke Orsinio. Orsinio is in love with Olivia, but she does not like him at all. Cesario is asked to use his talent as a wordsmith to convey Orsinio's love to Olivia. This he does so well and with such conviction that Olivia is completely thrown off her stride.

 Romantic Comedy

Today's romantic comedies are indebted to the romantic comedies of Shakespeare's time. Characters falling head over heels in love, major misunderstandings about whether this love is mutual and the delightful denouement at the end, make it an unwearable genre. That these love stories are for the most part confined to a -boy meets girl- situation was already disputed by Shakespeare with Twelfth night, so high time to continue on this path.

 Cast and Composer

The cast consists of five actors. Including Utrecht-based Jaike Belfor, known from her participation in Wie is de Mol and De Slimste mens, among others. Especially for this performance, composer Willem Friede (New Cool Collective) was asked to provide this Shakespeare adaptation with new music. This to complete the gender fluid musical spectacle.

Christmas in Theatre Kikker

Since 2014, theatre group Aluin has played Theatre Kikker every year during the Christmas holidays. In addition to performances in the theatre, Aluin also plays over 200 shows in schools every year. With this play series in the Christmas holidays, we target families with children of secondary school age. Families who fancy a romantic comedy, to talk about gender identity afterwards at Christmas dinner.

About Alum

Theatre group Alum has been making clear and concrete theatre for more than 30 years. Text theatre with plenty of humour and dynamics for a wide audience. The primal stories we play come from the classical repertoire from the ancient Greeks to Shakespeare. We regularly create new repertoire, but it is always based on that wonderful showcase of great stories about human inadequacy.

Alum elevates cutting up humour and drama to an art, appealing to the hearts and brains of a lot of very different people. Assuming that theatre can be inspiring for everyone, we search for the essence of all these primal stories and bring them in various formats.
