With the new year, the new Filter Translation Prize jury has also started work. Thanks to the GAU (Group of General Publishers) and in cooperation with the ILFU (International Literature Festival Utrecht), the Filter Translation Prize 2023 will be awarded during the ILFU festival (22 Sept - 7 Oct 2023). A surprising number of interesting translations appeared in 2022. Nominations will be announced summer 2023.
The new jury members in 2023 are: Elma Drayer (author, de Volkskrant journalist), Maartje Kroonen (bookseller), Eline Jongsma (literary translator), Cees Koster (translation scholar, Filter editor) and Marcel van den Boogert (editor, Filter Foundation board member).
Elma Drayer is a neerlandica and journalist. She writes columns and book reviews for de Volkskrant and is also active as a writing teacher, editor-in-chief and chairman of the day. A biography on translator and publisher Alice van Nahuys (1894-1967) is in preparation.
Eline Jongsma studied Scandinavian languages and cultures in Groningen and took the research master's in Literary Translation at Utrecht University. Since 2018, she has been working as an independent literary translator and subtitler from Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and English.
Maartje Kroonen is shop manager and bookseller at Bijleveld bookshop in Utrecht.
Cees Koster works as a lecturer-researcher in Translation Studies at Utrecht University and is editor of Filter, journal on translation. He is co-author of the monumental Translation in the Low Countries. A Cultural History.
Marcel van den Boogert is an independent editor. Previously, he was chief and final editor of the literary-historical journal De Parelduiker (1995-2005), director of Publishing & Policy at the Nexus Institute and final editor of the essay journal Nexus (2005-2015).
Filter Translation price
The prize money is EUR 10,000, made available by the GAU (Group of General Publishers). The GAU thus expresses the importance it attaches to good translations and translators. The Filter Translation Prize is awarded in cooperation with the ILFU by the Filter Foundation and rewards the creativity of the translator in solving translation problems arising from the specific, special nature of the work to be translated. www.tijdschrift-filter.nl and www.algemene-uitgevers.nl
ILFU - International Literature Festival Utrecht
