This is the page where you can find the guide for authors who want to publish on our site. Log in to read it. If you have an idea for a story, please let the editors know, via email, facebook nof whatever channel you like. You can also still in the canal  '# story ideas' on Slack, our internal network. If you don't have access to Slack, you can ask at the administrator. The channel and reporting stories is mainly for the rest, so colleagues have an idea of each other what they are doing. Asking permission is not an issue there. That is a matter between you and the chief/final editor. Who, by the way, is also perfectly accessible via Slack

Culture Press provides space for journalistically independent articles without (blatant) self-promotion. Culture Press productions are there to support the mission of Culture Press.

For (blatant) self-promotion, anyone is free to advertise at the applicable rates.

Want to post a piece?

All authors may offer a piece, but the chief editors reserve the right to refuse offered pieces if, in the opinion of the (chief) editor, the work does not meet the prevailing requirements of quality and journalistic independence.

Author remuneration

Culture Press is a channel through which you can post stories. You get your income through donations from readers, whom you can call upon by placing your story (also) in the 'Value and Donate' category. Donation calls will then automatically appear next to your story. Donations received are entirely yours as the author. Each month, you will receive an overview of the donations and we will pay them out. You do not need to send an invoice for this.

In rare cases, Culture Press also distributes assignments. Agreements on fees are made on a case-by-case basis.

There is no further charge for publishing on Culture Press, if you submit your piece as described in these instructions.

Workflow

Much internal communication between Culture Press members is done through our own network: http://cultuurpers.slack.com. If you do not yet have access to that channel, you can request an invitation via Wijbrand Schaap: wijbrand.schaap@cultureelpersbureau.nl.

Questions, story ideas, claptrap, advice and tips: we share everything there.

How do you put a post online?

The entry screen for new posts may be a bit intimidating for old-timers. In practice, however, it's not too bad. In WordPress, our system, you now divide a post into ´blocks´ instead of paragraphs. Since we work mainly with text, you can just use the term 'paragraphs'. The 'blocks' are interesting if you want to insert images, videos and things like that

You can enter text in two ways:

1a: in your favourite word processor;

1b: directly in wordpress.

1a: your favourite word processor

If you work in your favourite word processor, i.e. MS Word, LibreOffice Writer or Google Docs (works best with wordpress), just write your text as usual. Just make sure you insert an interline every two paragraphs on average, and give it the value 2, i.e. Heading 2 or H2.

Put links to YouTube videos and the like as plain text on a separate paragraph, avoid having your word processor directly turn them into a link.

When you add a 'service line' at the end, i.e. actually a footnote with, say, what you saw and when, or what the book is called and where it can be bought, you do it simply by opening the paragraph with the word 'note' in square brackets and ending it with that word again, but with a slash in front of it. Then it looks like this:

Here is the service line with everything you want to put in there.

After you have written your text, you can insert it into the wordpress editor via simply cut and paste. So go to Culture Press, log in and at the top of your screen press the plus sign and choose 'New Message'.

So the input screen looks different. You'll see 'Add title' at the top, and below it a line saying 'Type / to choose a block'. Put your mouse in there, and paste in your text from your word processor. If all goes well, it is now neatly in the format of your word document. All you have to do now is add a title and the most important work is done.

Now go to 'Ready for review (below)

1b: directly in wordpress

Log in, choose 'new post'. So the input screen looks different. You'll see 'Add title' at the top and a line underneath with 'Type / to choose a block'. So if you already have a headline/title in mind, you can already enter it, you can also wait a bit. In the line below, where it says "Type / to... etc" you can now just start typing. A new paragraph, or 'block' is created simply by pressing [return]. So if you want to insert a header, you also click [return] at the end of your text paragraph. Then click it, and a menu will appear near your cursor. There, choose 'heading' and the default option [H2].

So in practice, it just works like a word processor. Even if you insert a youtube link, you can just do so on such a new paragraph, the link as plain text, and wordpress makes a nice 'embed' of it itself.

For the service rule, start your paragraph with 'note' in square brackets, and end it with '/note' in square brackets, i.e.

Here is the service line with everything you want to put in there.

2: Getting ready for review

Having entered your text, go to the column to the right of your text. Make sure the 'Message' tab is active. In this menu, you can then look for the category block, the tags, the featured image. Click there, just as you are already used to, for all the options relevant to your post. Don't forget to click 'Rate and Donate' as a category!

Finally, press 'publish'. In the right-hand sidebar, the menu will now appear where you can choose 'Ready for review'. Press that and I will automatically receive a notification via e-mail that your story is ready.

Click in the top left corner (where our logo is) to return to the dashboard. This is necessary because otherwise the final editors will continue to think you are still working in the post even if you turn off your computer. So turn off your computer only after you've exited the editing screen via the top-left button!

3: Getting donations

Many thanks and now just hope for the reader's generosity. You activate this by writing in such a way that your reader really gets the idea that they have learned something from you, that you have offered something that cannot be found anywhere else and that they can use in their future life. Above all, make your last paragraph a finale that resonates for a long time, but remember that your first paragraph should immediately create the expectation that you have something special to offer!
