Teleac course on muezzin singing delivers little deeper insight #hf10

Above nice audio of the Holland Festival. We went to watch and listen at this performance. Afterwards, we talked to actor Sabri Saad el Hamus and reviewer Martin Schouten. They had their own views on this play, which was announced as follows:

Cairo is the city with thirty thousand minarets. Here, five times a day you can hear above the street noise the cacophony of muezzins calling the faithful to prayer. But the government wants to end this tradition and distribute the call, the azan, by radio from now on. In Radio Muezzin we meet four muezzins from the Egyptian capital: a farmer's son, a former electrician, a blind Quran teacher and the vice-world champion of Quran recitation. Stefan Kaegi directed the muezzins at a moment when their lives are in danger of changing dramatically. With video footage from their lives behind them, they recount their history and what the azan means to them. This 'documentary theatre' provides a surprising and fascinating insight into modern Egyptian society.
