Tirza is Dutch Oscar entry

Tirza by Rudolf van den Berg based on Arnon Grunberg's novel of the same name has been chosen as the film that will be sent to Los Angeles as the Dutch entry for the Oscars in the best foreign film category. Holland Film announced today.

In this grim drama, Gijs Scholten van Aschat plays a man who, after a failed marriage, wanders desperately through African Namibia in search of his last foothold, his missing favourite daughter (Sylvia Hoeks). Rudolf van den Berg has several highly acclaimed book adaptations to his credit, including The evenings (Golden Calf best film 1990).

For a long time, it looked like the selection committee would face a difficult choice in naming an Oscar contender this year. No real favourite had emerged last season. But with Tirza, which has still been seen by few, there is now nevertheless a film that will hopefully impress the members of the American Academy of Motion Pictures enough.

Tirza is the opening film of the Netherlands Film Festival on 22 September and will be released in cinemas on 30 September. (Leo Bankersen)
