Fuchsia the mini witch by Johan Nijenhuis has become the big audience favourite of Cinekid, the festival for film, television and new media for young people. On Friday evening, it was announced at the awards ceremony that Foeksia had won both the general audience award (Z@pp Cinekidleeuw) and the audience award for best Dutch children's film.
Fuchsia the mini witch, based on Paul van Loon's book of the same name, is a cheerful adventure of a little witch who, together with a human boy, must save the witch's forest. Although the reviews were not all enthusiastic (enjoyable entertainment, but not particularly original was often the verdict), Nijenhuis' intention to put a smile on children's faces with humour and slapstick appears to have been completely successful.
The jury prize for best Dutch children's film went to Letter secrecy by Simone van Dusseldorp. This suspenseful thriller that addresses the issue of children's loyalty to their parents was the opening film of Cinekid. Like Foeksia is also Letter secrecy based on a popular children's book, in this case by Jan Terlouw.
Best film in the international competition was New Zealand's Boy by Taika Waititi. This infectious comedy about an 11-year-old boy who discovers that his father is not a hero but a clumsy thief who forgot where he hid the loot was also previously awarded best youth film in Berlin.
