Theatre photographs are a profession in their own right. From an already staged subject, the professional photographer chooses the catchiest image. There are those who look down on them for that reason, there are those who admire the theatre photographer for that very reason. We are naturally more inclined towards the latter. But the profession is under pressure. From smartphones, from buyers who no longer have space or money for real photographs.
Time for the performing arts trade magazine TM (@tmtheaternieuws), threatened in its survival, to devote an exhibition to it. Not very big, but with a catalogue (the December 2011 issue of TM) that is worth seeing. You can see the photos for yourself at KochxBos Gallery at 1e Anjeliersdwarsstraat 5 in Amsterdam. We already attended the vernissage, or, as it is called in photo exhibitions: the fixation moment.
