"A beautifully drawn portrait, sublimely expressing a mixture of cunning, intransigence and power-seeking, Implicit and without text."
So says the Inktspot Prize jury about the drawing Sigfried Woldhek made for the NRC of 30 March 2011. Pictured is Henk Bleker, former CDA party leader candidate and state secretary for former nature.
Woldhek, who has been working as an illustrator for publications including Vrij Nederland and NRC Handelsblad since 1976, crushed the competition with this drawing, which, according to the jury, included Ruben L Oppenheimer and Bas van der Schot, for this reason:
"Woldhek has an eye-catching graphic drawing style and, in terms of physiognomy, posture and ambiance, sets a masterful characterisation. Even though one explicit event - nature policy - is the trigger for this drawing; it feels more like a total characterisation of Henk Bleker."
The award consists of a certificate and a statuette and does not otherwise make the winner rich. It was presented at Nieuwspoort on 17 January 2012.

Woldhek is a masterful draughtsman with a deep understanding of his subjects. Always a pleasure to look at his creations. However: Woldhek should have won this award much earlier, as he has been at work for some 35 years. His metier is the psychological portrait.
In 2012, however, the jury would have welcomed illustrators who look beyond national borders more often, have a greater eye for contemporary techniques and operate decisively.
The world has gotten a bit faster and the subjects of cartoons, Bleker foremost among them, can be fathomed night after night in close-up on talk shows.
