Saving Tropenmuseum paid for from art acquisition budget

The Tropenmuseum has been saved, we already knew that, but the House of Representatives still wanted to know where that was paid from. After all: the government is not going to spend more money, we have to do that.

Enfin.

From the answering the parliamentary questions by culture minister Jet Bussemaker reveals that museums will be able to spend 5.5 million less on art purchases in 2016 at least. In other words: picking up a nice Mondrian won't be possible in 2016. How to do from 2017: the money earmarked for museums remains the same, so that 5.5 million will have to be compensated, cut back or 'taken out of the market' somewhere.

Funding the collection as it has been built up is not obvious. After all, discovering a new colony and exploiting it is very much out of fashion in recent years.
