Sunday is the Gala of Dutch Theatre. In a sober yet festive decoration celebrates the theatre sector's continued existence. Quite an achievement, even if the minister doesn't think so. Be that as it may. We are going to award prizes. And not Oscars, Olivers, or Césars, but Louis, Theo, Colombina and Arlecchino.
How that came about? Tradition. Louis and Theo are named after Louis Bouwmeester (m) and Theo Mann-Bouwmeester (v), who were part of a rich theatre family. Arlecchino and Colombina are names of stock characters in the Commedia dell'arte a medieval theatre genre.
So we are in favour of a new name for those awards. Because nobody understands this yet. But entirely in keeping with tradition, we will then link them to a family tradition. That turns out not to be so difficult. Because we have a few: Greidanus, Krabbé and Croiset. Not entirely coincidentally, all starting with a 'kr' sound. If we were then to call the theatre awards the 'Golden Crow', which would seem obvious, it would be confusing with the cabaret awards called the Johnny Kraaijkamp Awards (also a 'kr').
How about the 'Golden Scratch'? Did we cover the Van Aschat family too. Because that's the only family of actors where it doesn't 'kr'aakt.
And now the floor is yours. Who do you think should win the prizes? You can do better than the judges. And once it is Sunday, you can let us know in the same polls who you think should have won.
