For those who think film critics have too little appreciation for blockbusters and action films, here is an uplifting message. The FIPRESCI Grand Prix of the International Federation of Film Critics goes this year to Mad Max: Fury Road.
493 Members of this organisation pointed out in a poll Fury Road as the winner. George Miller's fourth volume of his post-apocalyptic fantasy thus beat the three other finalists: The Assassin (Hou Hsiao-Hsien), Son of Saul (László Nemes) and Taxi Tehran (Jafar Panahi).
In our country too, this heady adrenaline ride mostly scored four or five stars and reviewers praised the frenzied craziness of this spectacle. Bor Beekman additionally observed in the Volkskrant: 'It is hard not to think of IS when seeing all those gun-toting, improvised fighting vehicles racing through the desert.'
The award will be presented at the opening ceremony of the San Sebastián Film Festival on 18 September. 'You could have knocked me over with a feather! It's lovely to have this great cohort of critics acknowledge our collective labours in this way,' reacted a surprised Miller upon learning the news.
