The six shows you must see in October

Opera2Day, Mariken in the garden of delights (opera)

The young The Hague company Opera2Day produces one splendid performance after another. But at the same time, it is not resting on all its laurels, opting for adventure by bringing an entirely new opera together with the Nationale Toneel. At its centre is Mariken van Nieumeghen, the girl 'who lived with the devil for seven years', the music is by Calliope Tsoupaki and starring Golden Calf winner Hannah Hoekstra. playlist

Zep, Othello (drama/youth)

How do you get 240 adolescents to shut up? And that to a play by Shakespeare? Zep, with help from Brainpower does it. And a lot more than that. Wijbrand Schaap already watched a try-out and explains how nobody missed a single letter in this report. playlist

Sonnevank / Silbersee, We are going on a bear hunt (youth, 4+)

Five singing actors and a dancer tell the exciting story of a father, his children and their dog who go on a bear hunt together. With the musicians of Silbersee. playlist

Theatre Group Oostpool, Fresh Young Gods (stage)

As director, Joeri Vos as we speak impressed with his adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III. As a writer, he now comes up with Fresh Young Gods, entering the second part of a trio of satirical pieces about 'good intentions'. Played the first part, The unprofitable, took place at the bottom of society, now everything revolves around a group of SHELL bosses who, on the one hand, are out of their minds as to what to do next and, on the other, face the possible collapse of their lives. playlist

NT Gent, En avant, marche! (musical theatre)

What would we be without brass bands, harmonies, wind bands? Alain Platel a Frank Van Laecke approach the phenomenon of the music society as a 'mini society' in itself: a collective of very different individuals trying to keep to one and the same marching direction as best they can. With varying degrees of success. playlist

The Southern Theatre and t,arsenal mechelen/GEN2020, Marieke Marieke (stage)

"Ay Marieke Marieke le ciel flamand". No, Marieke Marieke is not yet another Brel performance, but one about Flanders and the Netherlands. One that is painfully topical, because at its centre are refugees. Refugees who came by the thousands from Flanders to the Netherlands a hundred years ago and were depicted here as lazy and unreliable. They came to steal our jobs. What does migration mean and how do we deal with it? How did we do it a hundred years ago and how do we do it now? playlist

Henri Drost

Henri Drost (1970) studied Dutch and American Studies in Utrecht. Sold CDs and books for years, then became a communications consultant.
