Expectations were high. Both Reinbert de Leeuw and Barbara Hannigan had been nominated for a 2018 Grammy Award. Hannigan was shortlisted for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, for her recordings of music by Berg, Gershwin & Berio. De Leeuw competed in the Best Classical Compendium category with his compilation of all conducted choral and ensemble pieces by György Kurtág.
Hannigan cashes nomination, De Leeuw grabs beside
Hannigan managed to cash in on her nomination on Sunday 28 January, while De Leeuw grabbed it. The NOS reports on its website that no Grammy went to the Netherlands. On her winning CD Crazy Girl Crazy, however, Hannigan conducts the thoroughly Dutch Ludwig Orchestra. Fully deservedly, the champagne is now being uncorked in Amsterdam. It is a magnificent release, with vibrant playing and compelling vocals by the conducting soprano.
Incidentally, I would also have heartily granted Kurtág's release a Grammy; I mentioned him earlier 'historic'. The Groot Omroepkoor, Cappella Amsterdam, Asko|Schönberg and a host of soloists delivered a top performance; the recording is flawless. But De Leeuw and his were surpassed by the CD All Things Majestic, devoted to American composer Jennifer Higdon. 'A bit disappointing,' De Leeuw told the ANP. But the nomination alone has given the CD box set a big boost.
And that the prize eventually went to a portrait CD of a female composer makes my day.…
