Six hilarious, humorous and melancholic silent films by the great universal genius Charlie Chaplin. The NBE has asked four composers - Oene van Geel, Micha Hamel, Reza Namavar and Julian Schneemann - to compose new music that seamlessly accompanies and supports these films. Authentic and contemporary interpretation of important heritage from film history, an ode to Chaplin's artistry.

The four composers have been chosen for their different qualities. They think eclectically, each in their own original way. Oene van Geel has roots in jazz, Reza Nemavar both in Bach and the revolutionary avant-garde. Micha Hamel is, perhaps most of the four, the true film composer. Julian Schneemann has developed a style all his own, drawing inspiration from music from all over the world. Besides the slapstick and fun, the programme also has a serious layer, as is always present with Chaplin.

As a contrast to the newly composed soundtracks, the NBE plays the most contemplative work Philip Glass wrote for the film: Mishima, a Life in Four Chapters.

Bart Schneemann, oboist and artistic director of the NBE:
"I have long dreamed of a project featuring Charlie Chaplin films. Of course, there are more greats in that world, like that insane Buster Keaton, but Chaplin is, in my eyes, the universal genius. With him, it's never just about the humour. There is always something behind it. He is the Johan Cruijff of silent film. By the way, we very deliberately did not choose classics like The Great Dictator or Modern Times. We show the lesser-known Chaplin from before 1918. They are really very funny and poignant films, which few people will know."
