At Concordia and the Vestzaktheatre, many performances continue as a live stream. On Saturday 13 March, for instance, Ryan van den Akker (known in musical leading roles such as Cyrano, My Fair Lady, Elisabeth, De Jantjes) will drop by with her performance 'Hiroshima in a child's soul'. A unique, personal narration of a poignant and terrifying story from her childhood. Theatre programmer Ellen Peters: "I think it's cool that Ryan van den Akker is coming to Enschede. She has done an awful lot of different things. From big concerts to the voice of Alfred Jodocus Kwak!"
On 6 June 1967, a sallow-green Volkswagen Beetle containing, two men dressed in long mackintoshes, approached the farm on the heath at Keer and Duuk. Only six-year-old Mathilde Adriana Maria sensed a danger looming this time that dwarfed all previous threats. She knew exactly what to do; put on her nuggets and run away as fast as she could, fleeing far away across the meadows. Exactly as her father had dictated to her and exactly as they had practised it together. Like a game. Ahead of reality.
However, a hard, gloved hand grabbed her in the neck and brought her to a radical halt. She knew it was lost, her survival in her family's paranoid labyrinth had ended.
The soldierly mackintoshes dragged kaar to the Beetle where, in a flash, she felt 'nothing'. Mathilde stepped out of her body. She no longer had a country, a home, a mother, a father, not even an illusion. There was only total bewilderment and the most profound fear.
Hiroshima in a child's soul. Mathilde Adriana Maria no longer exists. Resolved.
