22 Sept: Prince's Day Lecture - Steward Bert Wassenaar
Especially for Budget Day, two special lectures will be held on Wednesday 22 September from 14.00 - 14.45 and at 15.00 - 15.45 by the King's Steward Bert Wassenaar. On the rituals and symbols surrounding Prinsjesdag.
The Golden Coach is a recognisable part of the Prinsjesdag ceremony. H.M. King Willem-Alexander and HM Queen Maxima have not used the Golden Coach for 5 years due to its restoration and presentation at the Amsterdam Museum but before that, the king and queen arrived at the Binnenhof every year via this richly decorated vehicle. Prior to the speech from the throne on the third Tuesday in September, a royal procession passes through The Hague every year. The ostentatious procession departs from Noordeinde Palace at 13:00 and arrives at Ridderzaal about 25 minutes later, where the reading of the speech from the throne begins. As they depart, the King and Queen salute the banner of the armed forces unit displayed near the palace and the national anthem is played. What is involved in this carriage ride, and why do we actually do it this way?
During these two lectures, Steward of the King Bert Wassenaar will give a unique insight and explanation into the rituals and symbols surrounding Prinsjesdag and the use of the Golden Coach.
