The Silence of Tired Tongues, curated by Raphael Fonseca, features the work of 13 emerging artists born in Brazil. The artworks in this group exhibition convey a sense of 'saudade', which can be translated as a mixture of melancholy and longing.
The title of the exhibition is taken from a popular 1972 song by legendary singer Elis Regina, titled 'Casa no campo' (The house in the countryside) and composed by Tavito and Zé Rodrix. The lyrics are an ode to silence in an environment in a state of excessive unrest - at the time, Brazil was weighed down by an oppressive military dictatorship.
Fifty years later, the song is relevant again, partly because of the political climate defined by exclusion, oppression and exploitation. Yet this title reflects an existential vision - who among us, worldwide, is not tired of the turmoil we have experienced and seen in recent years?
The Silence of Tired Tongues invites both artists and audiences to reflect on silence and fatigue through explosion of colours, words and stories in moving image and sound.
Curator
Raphael Fonseca conducts research on curatorship, art history, art criticism and education. From 2017 to 2020, he served as curator at MAC Niterói (Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói, Brazil). He holds a PhD in Critic and Art History (State University, Rio de Janeiro).
Artists
Estêvão Parreiras focuses on the poetic language of drawing. He understands drawing as a desire to leave something of yourself behind. His experiments with mixed media on paper consist of reflections on his artistry and observations of the environment around him.
Aline Baiana takes a critical look at cultural and ecological traumas associated with the power relations between the hegemonic North and the global South. The work she created especially for this exhibition is about the genetically engineered soybean plantations in Brazil and how, little by little, they are not only silencing indigenous cultures but also taking their land.
Luana Vitra is a visual artist engaged in sculpture and installations. Iron, lead and many other mineral materials are some of her main interests. Her work in the exhibition starts from the idea of the body as a battlefield, in which the inner war between identity and representation has already been fought and settled by their own failure.
