Concerts and performances September 2023

Opening Gaudeamus Festival 2023 - September 6

This evening, Asko|Schönberg's programme is dedicated to transverse minds, composers who know how to break free from conventions and expectations. They play with our perception of time, challenge us to embrace microtonal intervals and integrate non-musical sounds into their dramaturgy. Music will be heard from nominees for the 2023 Gaudeamus Award Saad Haddad and Uri Kochavi, and from jury members Chaya Czernowin and Dutchman Jan van de Putte.
NB Asko|Schönberg's concert is part of a full-length opening programme.

Free radicals - September 14

Again, idiosyncratic creators take centre stage. In addition to works by Chaya Czernowin, Saad Haddad and the Jan van de Putte, who can also be heard at Gaudeamus, compositions by twentieth-century rebels Ives and Xenakis will be heard. Excitement guaranteed!

Yara's Wedding - 14 to 16 September

Selected by the Dutch Theatre Jury, special revival in Dutch Theatre Festival.

The (almost) musical Yara's Wedding is a production by NITE, Schauspiel Hannover, Asko|Schönberg and Slagwerk Den Haag, directed by Guy Weizman. The theme of the performance is the complex relationship between the 'East' and the 'West', framing the other based on origin, colour, orientation and social status. No confrontation is avoided in this highly musical and lively performance with 15 actors, dancers, singers and musicians from different backgrounds and nationalities.

Cage &Beyond - September 21

In the &Beyond series, we each take a composer as our starting point and look at his influence on and relationships with other composers. In this edition, John Cage is the starting point. The way composers seek and find freedom in their way of composing is central. The programme is compiled by our violinist Joseph Puglia, who presents it and takes the audience into the world of composers and their methods. Besides Cage, music by John Zorn, Pierre Boulez and Erik Satie, among others, can be heard.

Cambio madre - September 25

Together with Festival Ghent, Muziektheater Transparant and soloists from the Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth, Asko|Schönberg performs the world premiere chamber opera Cambio madre.
Rosa Montero's libretto tells in incisive dialogues the story of a couple who want a divorce and discuss it for the first time with their children. To make matters worse, the husband's mother and lawyer turn up. The latter is a family friend and as a lawyer specialises in divorce, but he turns out to be slightly closer to the mother than expected...
