Utrecht 8 May 2024 - In November, all voting Americans will go to the polls and elect their new president. In the weeks leading up to and during the election, the play King Krump can be seen in theatres across our country. King Krump is a breathtaking Shakespearean king's drama in a modern twist. Tug away from talk shows, 'America connoisseurs' and conspiracy theories and indulge in lust for power, love, satire and fate in the theatre.

King Krump

Against his expectations, Krump (Mark Kraan) is elected king. He feels loved and wants to retain his power at all costs. His wife Melania feels doom approaching. Krump wants to control the world and goes further and further to do so.

King Krump is a king drama in five acts with the energy of a kickboxing gala and the suspense of House of Cards. Philosophical treatises interspersed with farcical slapstick. Bloody massacres followed by romantic serenades. Five live episodes to bing in one evening; from the euphoria of an election victory to the dark downfall of a ruler losing his grip on reality.

The NUT, Greg Nottrot and Jibbe Willems

Since 2007, under the direction of artistic director Greg Nottrot, NUT has been making performances at special locations in the neighbourhood, in the city of Utrecht and the rest of the country. NUT's performances are about what tomorrow's world could look like. NUT brings together 1001 perspectives, embraces doubt and makes the complex accessible.

Jibbe Willems writes drama, youth theatre, librettos and also lyrics for musical theatre in a multitude of styles. With Koning Krump, he pays tribute to his inspirator William Shakespeare. In his style, but with a modern twist, Jibbe Willems wrote a grand and compelling drama that is both socially critical and about human limitations. A play in five acts with murderous errors, love affairs, lust for power and populism surrounding the person Krump, who, completely against his own expectations, has gained the most powerful position on earth.
