After a successful first edition of Eye meets Marmoucha, Marmoucha Orchestra is back at Eye for a special event: the live accompaniment of the silent film Kif Tebbi on 8 June.
Kif Tebbi
When the Turks loot the countryside in Libya for supplies for their troops, Mné, an Arab girl from a nomad tribe with whom Ismaïl is in love, flees across the desert to him. This is the beginning of adventures that will eventually bring Ismaïl before a Turkish military court. The film has Dutch intertitles.
About the historical colonial background to the film, Eye curator Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi will give a lecture at Eye's Cinema 4 on Saturday afternoon 8 June (16.30) beforehand. In addition, Eye Meets Marmoucha screenings are also scheduled on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 June.
Marmoucha Orchestra
The Marmoucha Orchestra Quintet puts an innovative spin on silent film and makes it come alive again. Enjoy an evening of passion, drama and beauty.
The Marmoucha Orchestra Quintet consists of five talented musicians from diverse musical backgrounds and influences, but with a common passion for music and the diversity in musical languages, styles and traditions of North Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. They play the bass, oboe, piano, guitar and percussion. Their music is an intriguing combination of traditional pieces and their own compositions. They create an atmospheric and emotional soundtrack for the film, in which improvisation and interaction play an important role.
