A major frustration of the Dutch film world has come to an end. After 38 years, we again have a film in the main competition at Cannes. The new film by Alex van Warmerdam Borgman is competing for the Golden Palm, it was announced this morning. The last Dutch film to receive this honour was in 1975 Mariken van Nieumeghen By Jos Stelling.
"We are incredibly happy. I see the Cannes Film Festival as the Olympics of cinema. The highest stage on which you can measure your film internationally," says producer Marc van Warmerdam.
Borgman is a dark narrative in which the character Camiel Borgman arrives as an outsider in the gated lanes of a villa estate. His arrival is the beginning of a series of disturbing events surrounding the carefully erected façade of an arrogant, well-to-do couple, their three children and the nanny.
The lead role is played by Belgian actor Jan Bijvoet. Other roles include Eva van de Wijdeven, Annet Malherbe and Alex van Warmerdam himself.
Van Warmerdam will be up against the likes of Steven Soderbergh, Nicolas Winding Refn, Roman Polanski, François Ozon, Takashi Miike and brothers Joel and Ethan Coen at Cannes.
This year's Cannes Film Festival will take place from 15 May to 26 May. Borgman runs from 29 August in Dutch cinemas.
