The difference is just an 'h'. But confusing it is. This week, the rock opera 'Oh That Sea' premieres in Zeeland. In a month's time, the spherical location performance 'Oh Die Zee' will launch in The Hague, just as the Zeeland show is having its final weekend. The performances are both also about the Odyssey, the classic Greek epic about a Greek hero who, after destroying the city of Troy, takes 10 years to return to his own city, where he then has to kill 100 more lovers of his wife.
Apart from the source story and the title, the performances have nothing in common. Zeeland's outdoor spectacle is above all a musical event, with an uncountable number of Dutch musicians taking part. From Fréderique Spigt to Daniël Lohues, from Torre Florim of De Staat to Robert Jan Stips, once pianist of The Nits ('In De Duts Mountens'). The people behind it are, with the latter, Huub van der Lubbe and Tom de Ket.
In The Hague, director and journalist awakens Ingrid van Frankenhuyzen a old radio play to life, which she made years ago on behalf of the NCRV. The tapes finally came into her possession after years of wrangling over payments and rights, making the old tapes, featuring the now-deceased actor Ton Lutz as narrator, can be heard again. It promises to be an audio walk, a sounsdscape, combined with land-art.
So two completely different performances, in two locations. But with the sea as the backdrop. And the same pun in the title. Which is rather unfortunate.
Curious we are. We weren't invited to the premiere of the Zeeland thing, unfortunately, but will definitely be tagging along in The Hague. If anyone has been to see it in Zeeland: tell about it in the comments!

Coincidence or not but after the grant application, I discovered that Tom de Ket was also working under an almost identical name. Collective subconscious? Fixed.
This month's Odyssey is also danced by Lonneke van Leth 🙂 Fortunately, we also have a second name: Oh The Sea because our project is also in English and German.
That about the rights is not quite right. I've always had the rights but In Hilversum they assumed they wouldn't have to pay directors. Incidentally, Oh Die Zee is not a takeover of the radio broadcasts with Ton Lutz but his voice is accompanied by a reworking of Christoph Martin's (much later) soundscape. Again, though, with Imme Dros' matchless Dutch translation.
