Movies that Matter on tour: Burden of Peace

The film festival Movies that Matter not only offers a programme of engaged and socially critical films in March. With Movies That Matter On Tour, special films are screened throughout the year throughout the Netherlands. In May, the Dutch documentary Burden of Peace.

Burden of Peace tells the impressive story of Claudia Paz y Paz, the first woman to head Guatemala's public prosecutor's office. The country ravaged by years of devastating civil war remains to this day one of the most violent countries in the world. Claudia battles corruption, drug gangs and impunity.

She is also trying former dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who was responsible for a bloody genocide in the country. In doing so, she is making world history by convicting a former president of genocide in a national court.

The film will tour various cinemas across the country from 6 May. On 10 May, the screening at the The Hague film house present a guest speaker. Ralph Sprenkels is Central America expert and research coordinator at Impunity Watch. He has personally met Claudia Paz y Paz and knows the situation in Guatemala. After the performance, he will comment on the situation in the country.
