Dutch pianist/composer Matteo Myderwyk will be artist in residence at TivoliVredenburg in June and July 2021. Over three weeks, he will play four different concerts in four different venues.*

Matteo Myderwyk trained as a classical pianist, but decided to throw off all musical rules and laws after the conservatory. His goal: make music in the moment. This is how Myderwyk ended up in the wonderful worlds of free jazz, neoclassical music and electronica, performing at Lowlands, Oerol and the Amsterdam Dance Event. Constantly, he breaks laws by improvising with choices of instruments.

The four concerts:

  • Thursday, June 10 - Great Hall - film soundtrack
  • Friday 18 June - Hertz - piano & synths (solo)
  • Saturday 26 June - Cloud Nine - jazz (trio)
  • Friday, July 2 - Ronda - electronic (duo)

Matteo Myderwyk: 'It's a very great honour to be artist in residence at TivoliVredenburg, for me the perfect start of a new period after a rather gloomy time! I have chosen to start four projects and perform them in four different venues in TivoliVredenburg. I wrote my own soundtrack for the beautiful film Aquarela, an intense film entirely dedicated to (the power of) water. Performed live in the Great Hall where I will also play the organ. In the Hertz, I will play solo piano and synth work, and I might also perform some new compositions. Together with drummer Remco Menting, I started a duo around percussion and pianos last year; we already played during TivoliVredenburg's 32-hour live stream Andermaal and will now play a show in Ronda in front of an audience for the first time. Last, I invited two musician friends to improvise; we will do this in Cloud Nine. Haytham Safia on u'd and Osama Mileegi on drums. I am incredibly looking forward to going public with these projects, hopefully seeing you in TivoliVredenburg!'

*Based on the expected relaxation of corona measures, these concerts can continue with limited capacity and at a distance of one and a half metres.

Thursday, June 10 - Great Hall - film soundtrack

Accompanied by impressive film images of roaring waterfalls, creaking glaciers and raging seas, Matteo Myderwyk (including on our own Van Vulpen organ) plays a self-composed film soundtrack. He lets his musical ideas flow freely, just as water itself wants to flow freely. Get carried away by the impressive power of water combined with that of Myderwyk's music!

Friday 18 June - Hertz - piano & synths (solo)

At this solo concert, Matteo Myderwyk will perform his most recent work (including the new single from the upcoming album), composed during last year's lockdowns. Also featured is the album Parable (2020). Effortlessly, Myderwyk intertwines two worlds: those of classical and electronica. As he himself says: "I want my music to be 'malleable' and playable on different instruments.

Saturday 26 June - Cloud Nine - jazz (trio)

Matteo Myderwyk is a musical glutton who is constantly exploring new styles and genres. Thus, he forms the jazz trio Salaasa with Haytham Safia (oed) and Osama Mileegi (percussion). Not just any jazz: Salaasa's songs are based on Arabic music composed by Haytham Safia on the u'd (or oed), a pear-shaped string instrument widely used in Middle Eastern music. An exciting mix!

Friday, July 2 - Ronda - electronic (duo)

The duo Matteo Myderwyk (keys) and Remco Menting (drums) visited our Ronda earlier this year during Andermaal, a 32-hour event curated by Colin Benders. Major strength of this duo is the tension created by the interaction between drums and keys. Among other things, Menting is drummer of jazz trio Kapok, with whom he won the European Jazz Award. Together, they give Myderwyk's music a new dimension!
