The link between the Orpheus myth and Arnhem potenrammers is more obvious than you might think. At least, if your name is Peer Wittenbols and you are one of the country's best playwrights. That you can also think of accordions as part of that is, in turn, extraordinary. Still, Bloedkoraal (Blood Coral), a performance by accordion duo Toeac, with a leading role for Jack Wouterse on a text by Wittenbols and composed by Antony Fiumara, already promises to be one of the highlights of November Music. I spoke to Peer Wittenbols, Renée Bekkers and Pieternel Berkers after their very first public playback performance.
They talk about their love for the accordion, and the effect it has within classical music. Peer Wittebols also turns out to be an enthusiast, since he came into contact with it while working on the piece Brel, in which Jeroen Willems, who died too young, interpreted the Walloon singer to music by Oleg Fateev.
Blood Coral has become a chillingly beautiful performance. Listen to the makers' story here.
