Frisian theatre company Tryater is in the midst of its jubilee season in which it is celebrating its 60th year with a variety of performances and expressions, but is also already hard at work on the next season. In 2027, Tryater will bring the exciting car park performance Drift on stage, about the tantalising journey of discovery of an elderly woman. For inspiration, theatre producer Eva Meijering is looking for women aged between 50 and 90 to talk to her about their emotional development from childhood onwards.
Excitement on The Klanderij
Site performance Drift is scheduled for the summer of 2027 and will be performed in an intriguing outdoor location: on the top deck of car park De Klanderij in Leeuwarden. The lead role is for Joke Tjalsma (68), who has appeared on television in, among others Eyeballs, Bottom, Deer Park and Gooic women and at Tryater previously in, among others Part-time Paradise played. In May-June 2025, she is also the main character in Tryater performance Swimbad in Bakkeveen. In Drift her character goes in search of excitement, of feelings she has not yet been able to develop.
Confidential with Frisian women
To paint a full picture in the script and the making process and do justice to the character, theatre producer Eva Meijering likes to get input from women who also went through an emotional quest. Meijering, herself an actress with Tryater (including in Sâlt, the Oerol hit of 2023), prefers to engage in personal discussions, confidentially of course. This can be done at home or at a chosen location. Women in Fryslân aged between 50 and 90 are urged to apply for this by 21 March at Eva via publisiteit@tryater.nl. These interesting, low-key conversations will be held between April and June and will provide content for the script, which will be worked on from next summer by award-winning writer Frank Siera.
Meijering: ‘I meitsje graach persoanlike foarstellingen, dy'tichteby my own ferhaal and ynteresses steane. A subject like this - the life process that a woman goes through in several stages - intrigues me. What is “drift” foar dy? Hat dat mei lilkens te krijen, of is der ek sensuële drift? Bist wolris op drift slein? Hawwe dizze froulju altyd kontrôle oer harren gefoelens, en wêr sit dat gefoel dan? Is that different ast 15, 35 or 55 bist? I would love to talk about this, just as froulju ûnder elkoar and fansels fertroulik; at the dinner table or in another place. It should be a good and bysûnder ferhaal wurde and the Fryslân froulju can contribute to that.‘
Programme 2026
Meanwhile, Tryater is working through the now ongoing school performances Plûns and Anwar and the wolf, and the March programmed Ienakterfestival towards Swimbad. This large location performance in and around Bakkeveen's outdoor swimming pool, also starring Tjalsma, concludes Tryater's anniversary season (60 years). Ticket sales for the performance, which also stars Anna Raadsveld and Marjolein Ley, are already going surprisingly well early in the year. The jubilee book Tryater spilet (publisher Afûk) is still widely available in bookstores and at Tryater's performances. The next theatre season starts with the travel performance Fierder nei it noarden (September 2026). Tickets for this will be available soon.
